All in all we would say Dutchess is better than last week, but she is starting to turn her nose up at things again. Sometimes she will eat more later and sometimes not so much. We're still keeping an eye on things, but think she could still use some POP. For those that may not know what has been going on ... Within the last couple of weeks Dutchess just about quit eating for a bit. She got to where she turned her nose up at more and more. She had vomited a few times over a few week prior to that. Not even every day, but enough times that it caught mom's attention. Then she slowly started turning her nose up at more and more foods, which isn't like Dutchess. She has always been a good eater. Had her in at the vets and based on labs from earlier in the year which showed some elevated liver values it was decided to stop her Rimadyl, which she takes for arthritis, and start her on some prednisone. It was thought this would help with the arthritis plus might kick her appetite back up. Can't say we saw a big increase in appetite like we had thought and she started having diarrhea. Not sure if that was the steroids, all the junk mom was offering Dutchess to get her to eat SOMETHING, or some other underlying issue. Probably a bit of all three. Mom talked with the vet and he suggested stopping the steroids for 48 hours and then starting back with a smaller dose. That same evening her appetite finally picked back up. She had worked back up to her usual kibble and some chicken and mom started putting a smaller than normal portion of veggies in with her dinner. This morning Dutchess ate about three bites and walked away from her food. A couple of hours later she did eat the rest of her breakfast. This evening Dutchess started into her dinner with enthusiasm, but didn't eat much and walked away. That's where we are at right now. We are hoping she will decide to eat more of her dinner later. In the past Dutchess has had a good appetite and may be a little slow to eat, but she didn't walk away from food. Now she is really, really, really slow to eat and not finishing things. She will be 16 later this month. We realize she may not have oodles of time left, but we would like her to be comfortable in any time she has left.

Thank you Clarabelle . Me, too! Both meals yesterday she ate just a little and walked away. This morning she ate most of her breakfast. Mom may take her back to the vet this week and have labs done again since it is still up and down and not just steady improvement.

Thank you, Pippi, for the pupdate. We are continuing to pray for Dutchess. The main thing is that she doesn't suffer.

We agree Clarabelle . We don't want her to suffer. Mom just got back from the vets with Dutchess. She still is not eating all that well and her bed looked like she had bloody drool last night. So got her in to see if we can figure out what is going on. They took blood and the vet will let mom know if anything is very different from last time. He expects to find the liver enzymes still elevated and white blood cell count up. Her teeth REALLY need to be cleaned, and mom has actually wondered at times if that was why she wasn't eating well. Although mom has tried to offer soft foods and she still isn't gobbling everything down. Dutchess did vomit once yesterday - just a little bit. The vet said the vomiting and not wanting to eat could be the liver, and that may be playing into it, but her mouth smells. Noticed that starting a few days ago. So, if no big surprises on the blood work than Dutchess will have a dental on Wednesday. He thinks that may help a lot. If there are big surprises on the lab work then we will come up with plan B. He said this may not help and may still have the same issue afterward, but he feels this really may be part of the picture. It makes sense to mom because at times mom thinks Dutchess acts like she is hungry and wants to eat, but when mom offers food she sniffs and walks away.

The vet called this afternoon and unfortunately the labs were not good. Her kidney values were all way out of whack. They had been fine with the labs earlier this year. Mom and the vet talked about options. He said we could do fluids and that would make her feel better, but he felt most likely as soon as we stopped the fluids that she would go downhill again quickly. We know she has not been feeling well for a a couple of weeks and mom made the painfully difficult decision to help Dutchess to the Rainbow Bridge. Dutchess got her wings this afternoon.
