I know no one visits this thread much, so I'm going to try to tag everyone! 
I'm wondering if any of you can recommend a good pet insurance company. Ours, unfortunately, has not been all that we hoped.* We aren't going to be able to get Hershey's cataract surgery, because they have an "incident cap" of $1500, and the estimate on the surgery is closer to $6000. If he were younger we might consider it, but not at almost-14.
Anyway, if you have any info, good or bad, we could use it. For our next pup!

Angels Hershey & Winkie mom doesn't have insurance for me and she also didn't have it for  Abby. Until just recently, there weren't a lot of options up here in our part of Canada for pet insurance. Mom has looked into now that I have bad arthritis in both back legs and hip dysplasia, but those things wouldn't be covered as they are pre-existing for me. Sorry, we can't be of much help on this topic.

Thanks, Diane Buddy. I know, insurance companies love pre-existing conditions! We've been paying premiums on Hershey since he was a baby against something just like this, and now it turns out to have been useless. Thanks anyway, and hugs and  from me and Hershey. |

I'm afraid we are no help either. We have never had any pet insurance. Mom had thought about it at one point, but Cheeky had so many things when she was young that we figured they would say everything was pre-existing. Insurance might have come in handy this year though because we have sure had plenty of vet bills.
Wish we could be more help. Actually, now that I think about it I think we have a friend who has had some they have been pleased with. And I think they have a pup facing cataract surgery in one eye and possible removal of the other eye. Let me ask them what they have and if their insurance is helping with any of it. I'll get back to you.

Thanks, Laura Pippi. I thought more people had insurance, but I can understand why they wouldn't! Anything you can find out from your friend I'll be glad to hear. Mom first looked at insurance many years ago when she still had her cat, Whitley and when Abby was a puppy. As the peeps were in the process of relocating from Ottawa, Ontario to Saskatchewan, the insurance company told her that because of that move, a) they would only pay for the euthanasia of Whitley, who was ill with Megacolon and was 16 years old, and b) as Saskatchewan was not a province they were working in then, they wouldn't cover Abby at all. The representative even asked mom, "what Saskatchewan was"! This person/company clearly had no idea about Canada at all. It made sense they were in Ottawa, as that is a very big city, but there is life outside of Ottawa up here in the Great White North. I think our vet now offers 3 different insurance companies to deal with, but as I have pre-existing problems, and was quite ill as a puppy, mom has found they really wouldn't cover much for me. Sorry if this is rambling!
P.S. Whitley lived for another 18 months after that phone call with that insurance company and she did make it back to Saskatchewan which was nice as it was where she had lived most of her life.

Okay. Here is what I found out Angels Hershey & Winkie . They had Nationwide for two of their pups (who have both passed now). They were very responsive and you could claim, even if it was several years after the fact. You select the policy you want. You can have wellness, cancer care, or just treatment. They sent back the money quickly. One of the dogs had hip surgery and that was covered. She said it also covered euthanasia and cremation. They don't have insurance on the dog they have now that is facing the eye surgery. So don't know if Nationwide would have covered that or not. They have another dog, a puppy, they just got about a month or so ago. For that one they have Pet First insurance. They have not had to do anything with that policy yet. When I asked why they didn't go with Nationwide again they said Pet First was free for them right now. Came with the adoption I believe. Bottom line, they said they would really recommend Nationwide. Said it really seemed to cover everything, paid quickly, and didn't seem to have a time frame you had to fit the claim in. They had gone through papers and found things years later and were able to submit them and get paid. |

Buddy, that is the silliest thing I ever heard. They were in Ottawa and didn't know what Saskatchewan was???!!! That when I'd say "Thanks anyway!" and move on! That's good info, Pippi, thanks. Passing it along to my hubby. We were talking over dinner tonight and said really it would have made more sense to just put money in a savings account all this time, instead of paying insurance premiums for no coverage. But, I suppose if you do that, you run the risk of needing coverage early on that you haven't saved enough for. Where is a crystal ball when you need it??!

Hi everyone! We don't have insurance, either. BUT, when Sparkle needed surgery, we got the care credit card. How it works is that you put all the charge on the card and as long as you pay it off entirely before the term, (6, 12 or 18 months, we think) there is no interest. If you go over, the rate is SUPER high AND retroactive!! We think 27% or something like that. AND, you would need to ask your vet, because they are the ones who set the term length. www.carecredit.com/ |

Thanks Lisa TheWildOnes, I'll pass that along to my hubby as well. Our vet has never suggested anything like that. Hershey won't be getting the cataract surgery, but he is going in next week to have several bloody warts removed. Wonder what THAT'S gonna cost!! |

When I go to vet daddy says do whatever Buddy needs to have done just don't tell me what it costs. So mom tells him it costs $1 (one dollar) and he is happy, BOL!

Angels Hershey & Winkie when we can't pay for thing's like surgery for the lumpy's bumpy's and have them checked for Cancer. We always get a payment plan. The vet has to agree on it and they always have. We pay a percent down and make weekly payments. We've done that with our cat Edwina(Eddy) back in 2013 and also with Sweet Alexandria two times. The vets are very understanding.
