Pooks needs some prayers. He is having a hard time with his front right leg. It gets stiff and it pulsates/twitches at the top by his shoulder. A few years ago the vet lady stretched his legs and neck out and then added pills, but he has been just fine since then. We think his age ( 14yrs. 6mo.) and the cold temps have a lot to do with it. He is going to the vet tomorrow. I will call when they open at 7:30. So all the prayers and purrs and wags and good thoughts would very much be appreciated. I thank you all Prayers to all humans and critters. Carol and Molly and Pooks

Carol, POTP for Pooks!! We hope the stretching and pills will help again! Please keep us posted!
Anick, HVAC is an acronym for heating, ventilations and air conditioning. They are usually in one unit.
Laura, I used to use the stairs at work all the time, but since my back issues and back surgery, I am just way too slow and have to hold tightly to the railing. It really makes me look my age.
Kathy, I sure hope the surgery will be to remove the tubing! Glad they will do it all in one trip. Are the two hospitals at least in the same town?
Dee, I hope you are coping well with this big change in your life. I know it will hurt for a long time, but I hope the happy memories of your beloved husband soon fills that void in your heart.
Marty, I hope Hershey is hanging in there. I know how hard it is to see our beloved pups age. Tango is not doing well and it breaks my heart.
Leslie, I heard through the grapevine that Toby is being a brat! I hope it is just a phase and he turns into the loving pup I know he can be! Something about that breed, I guess! Ha ha!
Lorrie, I hope you will join us here!

Afternoon, Ladies~! Lisa, yes, at least the two hospitals are across the street from one another. And garage parking, once he gets to the building he will ask for a wheel chair push, because he says THEY know where they are going, and University is a HUGE hospital. Well, Stephen called this morning, and they are NOT going to remove the tubing, because it is helping hold an area open for urine flow. so just changing it, but they also said probably remove it in a couple of months, so I really don't know what they have planned. Doctors! The V.A. for pre and University for surgery, but they couldn't perform that kind of surgery at the V.A. Prayers for Tango. Carol, many many prayers for Pooks dear sweetheart!~ heart Hoping everything goes well at the VETs. Dee, yes, it is good to have friends to talk to. And happy to hear you are at peace with knowing Ward is in Heaven with your babies. Anick how does a heat pup work, how does it get airs into the house or is it set up with a thermostat like HVAC? And vents. Marty, hoping you aren't getting stressed out with Hershey. Sounds like so much going on with him. for your sweet pup. Laura hoping your getting some cooler weather, and able to get out for some hikes or walks with Pip 'n Cheeky. How are Nimbus and Inky doing? Milo seems to eat more kibble in the winter time, and he gets bee's most mornings and late at night. He was missing his Pa this morning. It was only 33* out so I didn't want to open the porch door, no heat out there, so Milo goes up to nap on his pillow. We may get some of that S word tomorrow, but much of it will stay north of us. It snowed south of us yesterday a bit, thinking they got an inch or so. I am not ready for the white stuff in October! Yesterday is was mid 30's with w/c mid 20's.

Sorry Anick, HVAC is my heat and air system for the house. I have a heat pump as well. (I wasn't sure until today. hehe) And where I live the inside piece doesn't have to supplement the heat often, but can. It mostly is the fan to circulate the air. Looks like my current system is 27 years old (both the inside and outside piece) ... and dead. I've talked to three different companies today to get quotes on a new system and what they can do to improve the a/c upstairs in the summer. I was hoping everyone would come up with basically the same solution so it would be easy to that is what needs to be done. Of course they have come up with three different solutions and I really feel clueless. Plus at this point I feel like half of what they all said is just a jumble in my mind. No quotes from any of them yet. They all said they would get back to me, and one even wants to bring out an install person to look over the issue of the upstairs and get his input as well. So that will be later in the week. One company has their own brand of system and it is not listed in consumer reports. So I don't like that. On the other hand, that company is offering a 12 year warranty that covers parts, labor, and maintenance on the system 2 times a year (every year) during that 12 year warranty period. I really like the sound of that. The other two companies have 10 year parts and labor, but no yearly maintenance. And thank you Lisa. I didn't really know what HVAC stood for. hehe. My brain feels like mush tonight, and I sure wish I knew more about systems to know which solution is more likely to help. And my biggest fear is that the solution that will really fix the issue of the upstairs will be so expensive that I can't do it. Carol, lots of gentle for Pooks! I saw your post on FB and sure do hope the new meds will keep him comfortable. I sure hated to see he had other issues going on as well. I'm with you - keep them as comfortable as we can. Dee, I hope you hear back from the nursing home or see a refund soon. Someone should at the very least get back to you and let you know how things will happen. Lisa, I had seen on FB that you were in a relationship. I was wondering if you had gotten back together or if you met someone that fast. hehe. So I came here and see the answer to that question. Now everyone can be happy. Yay Kathy, well darn. I was hoping the tube was coming out. for Stephen. He must be feeling frustrated. I hope all goes well tomorrow. Kathy, my heat pump has two parts ... the bit outside that until today I thought just did the a/c, but found out today it does both heat and a/c ... and the bit inside that is the air handler (fan) as well as auxiliary heat. It does have vents, air return and thermostat. In the summer it draws hot air out of the house and moves it outside. In the winter it (somehow) draws warm air from outside and brings it into the house. If it is below freezing (I think that was the magic number) then you need the auxiliary heat which can be gas or in my case will be electric. It's like electric strip heat and it helps warm the air. So in the simmer it draws heat out and in the winter draws heat in. Some of this is done with a chemical reaction in the refrigerant in the system. That is my understanding of how a heat pump works from talking to different people today. Inky and Nimbus were not happy today. They had to spend time in a crate while people were all over the house and opening things up. Didn't want curious kitties getting into things they didn't need to be in. Yikes on snow. October does seem early for that. You high temps are colder that my night time temps. - Laura (Pippi, Cheeky, Inky and Nimbus)

Kathy, I did find this drawing that might explain it. How it does work is that the heatpump part is outside and there are tubs fill with some gas like there are in a fridge that get inside the house into the furnace and use the fan and docks from the furnace system. In summer it work like your fridge, it make the inside of the house cooler by removing the heat and bringing cold inside. When it get cold it reverse itself, it bring in heat and send the cold out. The heatpump is good to heat a house until it get to 10F outside. Once it get below 10F outside it is the other part of the furnace that start to work, for me it is fuel oil. It does it all by itself with a censor outside. I hope it is not too confusing because I did not know some of the words in English and I had to look them up as best as I could.

Thank you all so much. It does feel like we have known each others forever. Each one of our babies is like our very own. Pooks bones are good, just stiff legs, 3 of them. 1 is fine. He has some pain med. Gabapentin, just like Molly takes. We are trying that for 10 days. The vet lady says he has cancer in him and his kidneys might be shutting down. He has lost a lot of weight. But we will keep him as comfortable as possible for as long as possible. He will not suffer. Please continue the prayers for Pookah. Molly sticks by him. But she did accidently step on his front right foot and he cried out. I guess he is in a Hospice now. I carry him out and back in for potty time but once in a while I do let him walk. He is a very independent and headstrong little guy. Yesterday was very heart breaking but today is like knowing what is coming and what has to be done soon. It hurts though like getting kicked in the gut. But he is so determined to do what he wants when he wants. Like getting up and walking around in the house. He does go in circles a lot but he still finds us and we do check on him a lot. Love and hugs to all and prayers for all. Carol and Molly and Pooks

Pooks reminds me of Geordie - so stubborn! Yet, it good to know they are still feeling like themselves. We are sending soooo many hugs your way.
Kathy, there is so much going on at your place. I hope that by the end of the week the medical issues will be behind you for a while and you can all relax.
I am so sorry about your eyes. I think that most of my problems are linked to the BP. It’s frustrating because there is so much I can’t do....including computer work. I feel like such a giant nothing.
Laura, congratulations on moving forward on getting estimates! I tend to hold onto things as long as possible too, so I know how hard it is to make that first move. A piece of advice came back to me as I was reading what you wrote about the different systems. It was basically, if your unit is working properly, do you call the service people out to “just check on it” or “flush out the system”? Probably not. Don’t discount the companies that use equipment you’ve heard of. Their warranties are probably very good. For the company that uses its own equipment, did you check them out on Yelp or any sort of community review site? That might give you some feedback on their equipment.
Lisa, hooray that you and Chuck are getting back together. I hope he realizes what a jewel he has and appreciates you.
Toby says he is super jealous of anyone getting cold weather and snow. We are going to be near 80 for the next 3 days.

Good afternoon everyone!
Carol we are heartbroken for you and Pooks. We know he has lived a long life in a wonderful forever home, though and that his last days (and hopefully months) will be full of love. Tango wanders around in circles, too, and it is so painful to watch. When I gave him a bath on Sunday, he cried!
Anick, thanks for the illustration and explanation. It all made perfect sense and now we feel pretty smart! Hee hee!
Dee, we feel the same way! It breaks our hearts when any of our friends' fur babies are sick or cross over the bridge. Even though we mostly have never met, we feel like they are part of our family, too.
Kathy, glad to hear the hospitals are across the street from each other. So sorry to hear they aren't removing the tubing, but hopefully the replacement will be less of a pain. Hugs and prayers for you both.
Leslie, you are NOT a giant nothing! Don't ever say that! There are little pieces of you everywhere, in the art you've created, the books you have published, the clothes you have made, etc! Sorry you are having bad time, but we have every faith that it will get better!
Laura, I'm glad I don't have to make those choices!! I wish there were someone you could get unbiased advice from. I am so sorry for the additional expense you are looking at. First the plumbing, then all the vet expenses and now this. When will there ever be enough money? Hope you can get by with something reasonable!

You did great with the heat pump explanation Anick. Dee, another beautiful shawl. Have you kept track of how many you have made now? What colors will the next one be? Carol, sending lots of those. I really hope the pain meds will keep Pooks comfortable. Will he be switching to a kidney friendly food? I hope you will still have lots of good quality time left with him. My heart breaks for you. Surely it is a good sign that he does want to get up and do things for himself. Leslie, all three places really recommend you have the equipment serviced every year (or better still twice a year so they catch it in heating and cooling cycles). So even if no problems you have it checked. Guess they can often find things before they become big problems. No estimates yet and other things moved all of this out of my mind for today. Around 80 or a little above here as well for a few days. Pippi could use some good thoughts. She ate part of a flower I had drying (cats knocked it off the counter) yesterday and I didn't realize it until I heard her chewing on it. She was fine last night, but slow to get moving this morning, and then vomited when she did get up. She has not eaten all day - refuses and walks away from all food, which is NOT like Pippi at all. She has napped most of the day and wanted to cuddle at times, which we have. At one point I thought her breathing was a little shallow. Decided to look up the flowers - I believe there were zinnias, which turns out are non-toxic to dogs. There is a chance it could have been a marigold, which could cause some mild stomach irritation, or could have been a chrysanthemum, which could be of a little more concern. Pretty sure it was a zinnia though. Decided to call the vet and they said to bring her on in. They took her temp and weight and the vet checked her out. I figured as long as I was there I would mention some other things I had noticed over the summer ... a whole lot more napping and less energy mostly, and from time to time thinking some lymph nodes looked a little swollen at times. Might look a little so one day and fine the next. I will back up a little and mention that in either March or April I had pulled a partly engorged tick off of Pippi. Shortly after that she had a swollen lymph node at her jaw/neck. She saw the vet then and did a round of antibiotics. All seemed fine after that. Back to today now. Vet said he doesn't think it was eating flowers that has Pippi feeling bad right now. Or if it was, that is not all that is going on. She has a fever of 104.2, which he said is about 2 degrees above normal for a dog. He said he was quite concerned about that. In fact they are keeping her over night. He wants to try and get that temp down and keep a close eye on her. They are going to check CBC and are checking for a couple of tick borne things. He said the tick borne things are not common in this area, but given the history it's worth checking. The vet said they may also give her fluids. It was late afternoon when I took Pippi in and late when they were drawing blood to do labs. So he said they might not have results in time to tell my anything tonight, and it's getting late enough that I am guessing I will not hear anything until tomorrow. I wasn't real worried when I first took her in. Thought they would give her something to settle her stomach and she would feel better in a day or two. I was surprised by the fever and now concerned about what may be going on. Hoping for good news tomorrow and already missing her tonight. The house just doesn't feel right. - Laura (Pippi, Cheeky, Inky and Nimbus)
